It is hard to tell what this is if you haven’t seen any examples of water drop photography.

There are different ways to capture these, but the most reliable way is to use a device called a Pluto Trigger paired with a Pluto Valve. I will spare you the science behind this. Several years ago our member, Glen Wyatt gave us a demo of this setup. I decided I wanted to give it a try so I got my own. The setup is a bit time consuming and there is a learning curve so it can take hours to do the setup and then dial in the right settings. The goal is to capture the precise moment when a second drop hits the first drop at the peak of its splash. This is referred to as a collision. A flash is used to freeze this precise moment.

This image features one of many of my water drops. This one reminded me of an alien creature, hence the name. I changed the colors for the background as well as the water to add variety. I never knew quite what I would get but that was half the fun.

Unfortunately, the company seems to have gone out of business so unless that changes you won’t be able to purchase your own but you are welcome to borrow mine for a day of fun.
