My Shot

Rockaway Nudibranch by Steve Jane Hannuksela

The image is of a multicolor dendronotid, a type of nudibranch (sea slug), that I took while scuba diving at Rockaway on Bainbridge. It is roughly two inches long and was in 60 feet of water. A 100mm macro lens and two strobes were used to capture the picture. The strobes help light the subject evenly and are on adjustable arms that allow me to aim them toward the subject. Nudibranchs are one of my favorite subjects to photograph. My goal in underwater photography is to show the beauty of the underwater world and that even the cold dark waters of Puget Sound are full of color. When the visibility allows it, I like to show scuba divers having fun floating next to a cliff that is full of life or floating above the bottom looking at the various animals and plants.
